brief

The Northern Super League has awarded Winnipeg an expansion franchise for the 2027 season, taking Canada’s professional women’s football competition to seven clubs and opening its first market in the Prairies. The yet-to-be-named club will be co-founded by former Canada international Desiree Scott and experienced coach and executive Rob Gale. Scott will serve as vice-president of community and player experience, while Gale has been appointed chief sporting officer.Scott said: “It is an honour to bring professional women’s soccer of this calibre to Winnipeg and to join a trailblazing organisation like the Northern Super League.“As a former player, I know exactly what an elite sporting environment looks like and what athletes need to succeed. We are building a club rooted in the community, backed by a premier development pathway, and ready to compete from our very first whistle in 2027.”Winnipeg will become the NSL’s first expansion club, joining founding sides Calgary Wild FC, Halifax Tides FC, Montréal Roses FC, Ottawa Rapid FC, AFC Toronto and Vancouver Rise FC.The addition gives the league a presence between Calgary and its eastern markets, widening its commercial reach and creating another regional platform for sponsors, broadcasters and player development.More than 3,000 supporters have signed a petition backing the Winnipeg project. The club has opened season-ticket deposits at C$50 per seat, with early access offered to those supporters before a wider public sale.Gale said: “We aren’t just building a team; we are constructing a spectacular fan experience and a lasting soccer legacy that will rival any major city.“We need the entire community to dig deep, show up, and help us write this next chapter.”The club’s name, crest, president, coaching appointments and stadium arrangements remain to be confirmed. Front-office operations and community engagement work are already under way ahead of the 2027 launch.Winnipeg’s arrival follows the NSL’s six-club launch and represents the first stage of its expansion strategy. League president Christina Litz has indicated that the competition is targeting an eighth franchise in 2028.The new ownership group will now focus on securing a home venue, completing its executive team and developing the playing squad before Winnipeg enter the league’s third season.
