White Stadium delay pushes Boston Legacy homecoming to 2028
Boston Legacy will remain in Rhode Island throughout the 2027 NWSL season after their White Stadium move slipped to 2028, extending the commercial challenge of building a Boston franchise without its permanent home.
Boston Legacy will play all their 2027 NWSL home matches at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket before moving into the renovated White Stadium in 2028.The revised timetable follows a construction review after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court cleared the legal path for the club and City of Boston to complete the stadium redevelopment.Boston Legacy controlling owner Jennifer Epstein said: “Boston deserves a world-class home for professional women’s soccer and youth sports.”The delay means the expansion franchise will spend another full season playing outside Massachusetts while construction continues on the permanent venue that formed a central part of their launch proposition.White Stadium will have 10,500 permanent seats, a natural grass pitch and upgraded amenities when completed. The broader public-private redevelopment has been reported at approximately US$325m.Construction is continuing six days a week, with structural steel and underground utility work among the current stages.The scheduling change creates more than an infrastructure issue. Boston Legacy must manage ticketing, sponsorship, hospitality and supporter retention through another season in Pawtucket before transferring that audience into their permanent Boston home.The club have already linked those two seasons commercially. Day One Members will be offered two-year renewals covering their 2027 seats at Centreville Bank Stadium and their seats at White Stadium for 2028.That structure effectively asks supporters to commit to the temporary venue while securing their place for the eventual Boston opening.Centreville Bank Stadium has a capacity of 10,500 and opened in 2025 as the home of Rhode Island FC. Boston Legacy have used the venue during their inaugural campaign alongside matches at Gillette Stadium.The club are also developing a purpose-built training centre in Brockton, giving the wider project a permanent Massachusetts operational base before White Stadium opens.The court ruling has removed a major legal uncertainty around the stadium development. The remaining challenge is execution: completing the venue while maintaining enough commercial and supporter momentum to make the 2028 move a growth event rather than simply the end of a prolonged temporary arrangement.
