brief

Al Ahly have signed a landmark investment agreement with Vodafone that will place the telecoms company on the club’s shirts and give it naming rights to their planned stadium.Vodafone will become the Egyptian club’s main shirt sponsor under a four-year contract, replacing Al Ahly’s previous principal agreement with a package described by the club as the largest in their history.Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib said: “The strategic partnership with Vodafone represents a new historic milestone in the club’s journey. The dream of Al Ahly’s fans of owning a world-class stadium has become closer than ever.”The naming-rights element has been agreed through Red Castle Company, the business responsible for financing and building the stadium.Al Ahly said the contract includes a mechanism designed to protect its income against currency movements. The club will receive payment in Egyptian pounds while benefiting from any increase in the relevant exchange rate. That structure is particularly significant in a market where currency volatility can reduce the real value of long-term sponsorship contracts and create uncertainty around major construction projects.Vodafone Egypt chief executive Mohamed Abdallah said: “The relationship between Vodafone and Al Ahly spans more than 25 years and has witnessed many shared successes and achievements.“This partnership reflects our belief that technology is the cornerstone of progress and helps develop the experiences and services offered to citizens.”The planned venue will become Egypt’s first stadium to carry the Vodafone name, with the company expected to support a broader smart-stadium strategy.Potential technology applications include ticketing, transport, connectivity and digital services designed to improve the supporter journey before and during matches.Al Ahly have also revised elements of the stadium design, including replacing concrete staircases with escalators to improve accessibility and the premium experience. The project is central to the club’s effort to generate more revenue from matchdays, hospitality, sponsorship and non-football events while reducing their reliance on existing venues.Vodafone said it has invested more than E£125bn in Egypt’s digital and technology infrastructure, giving the partnership a wider role within its national consumer and connectivity strategy. The agreement also strengthens Al Ahly’s ability to compete commercially with leading clubs outside Africa, using their audience scale and continental success to attract multinational partners.Construction remains the key test, but the combined shirt and naming-rights package gives Al Ahly a stronger financial base from which to turn their long-running stadium ambition into a deliverable project.
