USL unifies league brands ahead of Premier launch

The USL has unveiled a unified identity ahead of its planned 2028 launch of USL Premier and promotion and relegation, linking the rebrand to a broader strategy of national revenue sharing and more selective expansion.

brief

The United Soccer League has introduced a shared brand identity across its men’s and women’s competitions as it prepares to launch USL Premier and introduce promotion and relegation between three professional men’s divisions in 2028.The ‘United for Soccer’ identity connects seven existing leagues with the first official mark for USL Premier, supporting efforts to present its national network as one organisation to supporters, commercial partners and investors.USL president and chief executive Paul McDonough said: “We believe American soccer is stronger when more communities have clubs to call their own, more players have opportunities to advance and competition rewards performance on the field.“United for Soccer reflects that belief and our commitment to working alongside our owners, players, fans, and stakeholders to grow the game together.”The organisation has clubs in more than 200 communities across 45 states, spanning professional, pre-professional and youth competition. Its new visual system, developed with Tampa-based creative agency Spark, introduces a common blue colour and league marks inspired by woven goal nets. The redesigned USL wordmark incorporates an upward step within the letter ‘S’, intended to represent opportunities for clubs and players to progress.USL executive vice-president of marketing and communications Valerie Panou said: “We wanted our brand to represent both who the USL has become and where we’re going.“We’ve built something significant across our leagues and communities, but we haven't always told that story as one organization. United for Soccer gives us a stronger, more recognizable identity that brings the entire USL together.”The refresh is the organisation’s first since 2019, when it adopted the Championship, League One and League Two names for its men’s competitions. Those leagues previously used different colours and symbols, a distinction management believes made their relationship less apparent to audiences.McDonough explained: “Before we used to have different colors and different symbols, and I think all of that would just be confusing. And now people will know that, ‘OK, this is all part of the USL soccer ecosystem.’”From 2028, USL Premier is intended to sit above the Championship and League One, with clubs moving between the three professional divisions according to sporting performance. The women’s Gainbridge Super League identity retains its title sponsor’s arrow while adopting the wider visual approach, accommodating an existing commercial partnership within the common design. The changes accompany a broader corporate strategy shaped by institutional investment, including BellTower Partners, whose founder Kewsong Lee serves as USL co-chair.The organisation has also announced plans to share a portion of national revenue with clubs and says it is applying greater selectivity to expansion ownership groups.McDonough said: “The brand refresh is just another piece of our strategy to send the signs and signals to stakeholders and investors that we are moving into a next phase and a thoughtful phase that has a lot of strategy and discipline around it.”Additional creative material will be released during the remainder of 2026, with the identity scheduled to roll out across USL leagues and channels in 2027.
