Telefónica commits €1.65bn to keep full LaLiga offer until 2032
Telefónica has agreed a €1.65bn deal with DAZN that will keep every LaLiga match available on Movistar Plus+ until 2032, giving the Spanish telecoms group long-term control over one of the key assets underpinning its premium television and connectivity strategy.
Telefónica has agreed to pay DAZN €1.65bn for access to its LaLiga rights package across five seasons, ensuring Movistar Plus+ can continue offering every match from Spain’s top division until 2032.The non-exclusive agreement runs from 2027-28 to 2031-32 and is worth an average of €330m per season.It covers DAZN’s package of five LaLiga matches per round across all 38 matchdays and complements the rights Telefónica has already acquired directly from LaLiga.Together, the two packages allow Movistar Plus+ to retain a complete 380-match domestic league offering.The deal represents an increase on the previous arrangement between Telefónica and DAZN, under which the telecoms group was paying around €280m per season.The new package is also broader, with DAZN supplying five matches across all 38 rounds rather than 35.That increase reflects the continued strategic importance of football to Movistar Plus+, where premium sports rights are used not only to drive television subscriptions but also to support higher-value broadband and mobile bundles.Telefónica’s commitment comes despite growing pressure on consumers from the cost of football packages in Spain.Movistar’s cheapest combinations providing major domestic and European football have continued to rise in price, with customers paying substantially more than viewers using standalone streaming services.The operator is betting that the ability to provide all LaLiga matches, rather than selected fixtures, will continue to justify that premium.DAZN also benefits from securing a substantial wholesale revenue stream alongside its direct-to-consumer operation in Spain.The platform controls 190 LaLiga matches per season under the new domestic rights cycle, the same number as Telefónica.LaLiga’s domestic audiovisual rights for the 2027-32 period were valued at €6.13bn, around 9% higher than the previous cycle, with top-flight residential rights accounting for €5.25bn.Telefónica has also locked in Spanish rights to UEFA club competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, until 2031.The DAZN agreement therefore gives Movistar Plus+ long-term certainty around its two most important football pillars, allowing Telefónica to plan pricing, customer acquisition and retention strategies around a premium sports portfolio extending into the next decade.
