St Pauli joins UEC as first German club in challenge to elite-led model
FC St Pauli have become the first German professional club to join the Union of European Clubs, strengthening an organisation seeking greater influence for smaller and mid-sized teams in European football’s commercial and governance structures.
FC St Pauli have become the first German professional club to join the Union of European Clubs, adding a prominent Bundesliga name to an organisation campaigning for greater representation of non-elite teams.Founded in 2023, the UEC positions itself as an alternative voice for clubs that believe they are under-represented in European football decision-making.St Pauli said the move reflects their support for greater competitive balance, financial sustainability and more transparent governance across the European game. The club will contribute directly to UEC policy work, including proposals covering player development rewards, protection of domestic competitions and the organisation’s “one club, one vote” governance principle.St Pauli president Oke Göttlich has previously called for stronger regulation of professional football and will discuss European governance alongside UEC executives at the club’s STANDS conference at the Millerntor on September 25.The UEC’s wider policy agenda increasingly focuses on how money generated by UEFA competitions is distributed across the pyramid. It has proposed directing more revenue through domestic leagues and reducing the financial gaps created between clubs participating in different European competitions. That positions the organisation against a backdrop of growing debate over the concentration of commercial and political power among Europe’s wealthiest clubs.European Football Clubs represents more than 800 teams and plays a direct role in the UC3 joint venture responsible for commercialising UEFA club competitions. The UEC’s proposition is different, focusing primarily on clubs outside the traditional elite and arguing that representation should not be weighted towards teams with greater sporting or commercial power.UEC president Ovidiu Costeșin said St Pauli’s arrival was a “landmark moment” for the organisation and strengthened its ability to campaign for structural reform. The German club will also take part in the next UEC Football Forum in Brussels.St Pauli’s membership gives the UEC its first foothold in German professional football and adds a club with a significant international profile to its campaign for a broader redistribution of influence and revenues across the European game.
