Spanish Super Cup heads to Istanbul as RFEF tests new market

The 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be staged at Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium from February 2 to 7, temporarily ending the competition’s run in Saudi Arabia and taking one of Spanish football’s leading events into Türkiye.Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Real Sociedad will contest the four-team tournament, with Real facing Real Sociedad and Barcelona meeting Atlético in the semi-finals.The relocation is driven by a scheduling conflict in Saudi Arabia, where the dates overlap with the AFC Asian Cup. The Super Cup is expected to return to Saudi Arabia in 2028.The move nevertheless gives the RFEF an opportunity to test another major international market for the competition, with Istanbul offering a large football audience and an established major-event venue.The Atatürk Olympic Stadium has previously hosted two UEFA Champions League finals and provides the federation with the scale required for an event built around Spain’s biggest clubs.The RFEF considered several hosting proposals before selecting Istanbul, with Qatar also among the markets linked with the 2027 edition.Saudi commercial involvement will continue despite the geographical shift, with Riyadh Season set to sponsor the tournament in Istanbul.That arrangement maintains a connection with the market that has underpinned the Super Cup’s international expansion since the competition adopted its four-team format.The tournament has become an important revenue generator for the RFEF, with income from the event distributed across the wider Spanish football system.Its international distribution has also expanded significantly, helping turn the Super Cup from a domestic season-opening fixture into a globally marketed event involving Spain’s most commercially powerful clubs.The 2027 edition will therefore provide the RFEF with a one-year test of Istanbul’s hosting potential before the competition is scheduled to return to Saudi Arabia in 2028.
