Shakhtar turns Champions League shirt into Ukraine investment pitch
Shakhtar Donetsk are using Champions League shirt inventory for an owner-linked “Invest in Ukraine” campaign designed to put the country’s investment case in front of international business audiences.
Shakhtar Donetsk will carry an “Invest in Ukraine” message alongside SCM branding throughout the Champions League league phase as the club use one of their highest-profile commercial assets for economic promotion. The Rinat Akhmetov Foundation will appear on the reverse of the shirt, with SCM and Shakhtar jointly running the campaign. SCM chief corporate affairs officer Natalya Yemchenko said: “The time to invest in Ukraine is now.”SCM is controlled by Shakhtar owner Rinat Akhmetov, making the arrangement distinct from a conventional arm’s-length shirt sponsorship. The campaign is intended to use Champions League exposure to reach international businesses while Ukraine remains at war and faces a long-term reconstruction requirement.Shakhtar will play at least eight league-phase matches and will stage their European home fixtures at Stamford Bridge in London. That creates an international audience for a message designed around investment rather than conventional consumer-brand acquisition.SCM says its businesses have invested more than US$4bn in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war, including US$1bn towards restoring damaged facilities. The group has interests spanning sectors including energy, steel, telecommunications, finance and infrastructure.Shakhtar chief executive Sergei Palkin said attracting investment had become a new element of the club’s wider role in representing Ukraine internationally. The initiative shows how football inventory can be deployed for broader economic objectives rather than simply sold to the highest external commercial bidder. No sponsorship valuation has been disclosed and an equivalent market value should not be inferred from the use of the shirt. The owner-linked structure is therefore central to understanding the transaction.Shakhtar are effectively using their Champions League platform as part of a wider corporate and national investment campaign while continuing to play European football outside Ukraine. The commercial test will be whether the visibility generated through the competition leads to identifiable investor engagement or partnerships around Ukraine’s reconstruction economy.
