Ronin investment adds commercial firepower to Detroit City FC
Ronin Capital Partners has made the largest single investment in Detroit City FC’s history, adding sports marketing and live-events expertise as the USL club prepares for its next phase of commercial growth.
Detroit City FC have secured the largest single investment in their history from Ronin Capital Partners, strengthening the club’s ownership group with additional capital and expertise in marketing, sponsorship and live events.Ronin founder and chief executive Jay Farner will join the board of DCFC Holdings, giving the former Rocket Companies chief executive a direct role in the club’s long-term strategic development.Farner said: “What the founders, supporters and ownership group has built is extraordinary: a passionate supporter culture, a deep connection to the community and a bold vision for the club’s future.“With the continued growth of the United Soccer League and an amazing permanent stadium on the horizon, Detroit City FC is uniquely positioned for success.”The investment gives Detroit access to capabilities extending beyond project finance, with Ronin expected to support the expansion of sponsorship revenue, audience development and the club’s live-event business.Ronin’s wider sports portfolio includes investments in sports marketing intelligence platform Student Athlete Score, pickleball rating system DUPR, a TGL golf team and Motor City Golf Club.Farner said: “We believe Ronin’s vast experience in marketing, sports sponsorships and live events will help strengthen the club even more.“At Ronin, we have a passion for athletics and for soccer, with our COO, Nicole Vallianatos, being a former Division 1 soccer player. We are confident this passion, investment and long-term commitment will help to further secure Detroit City FC’s future.”The transaction reflects growing investor interest in USL clubs that combine established supporter bases with control over future venue and mixed-use development opportunities.Detroit City were founded in 2012 and have developed a strong local identity, giving Ronin an existing community platform rather than an expansion property starting without an audience.The club are preparing to move into AlumniFi Field, a planned 15,000-seat football-specific venue forming part of a US$200m development on the former Southwest Detroit Hospital site.The wider project includes residential units, parking and public space, creating additional revenue opportunities beyond matchdays and strengthening the club’s relationship with the surrounding area.Detroit City have secured close to 6,000 seat deposits for the new venue, providing an early indicator of demand as the club prepare to expand hospitality, ticketing and partnership inventory.Construction is scheduled to support an opening for the 2028 USL Championship season.
