Reebok uses NorthEast United deal to sharpen India sportswear push
Reebok has returned to competitive football sponsorship in India through a partnership with NorthEast United FC, using the club’s regional following to rebuild sporting relevance and support the brand’s wider growth strategy in the Indian sportswear market.
Reebok has returned to competitive football sponsorship in India through a partnership with NorthEast United FC, becoming the club’s official kit and merchandise partner ahead of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season. The agreement gives Reebok a platform across one of India’s strongest football regions while providing NorthEast United with a global sportswear brand as they seek to strengthen their commercial identity. Financial terms were not disclosed.NorthEast United chief executive Mandar Tamhane said: “We have always believed that the Northeast has the talent, passion and culture to make a much bigger mark on Indian football.“Reebok and Aditya Birla Group share that belief, and together we have an opportunity to connect that footballing identity with a new generation, while continuing to raise the standards for the club and the region.”The partnership carries particular strategic value for Reebok, marking the brand’s return to football sponsorship in India as it looks to increase its relevance with younger sports consumers.Reebok operates in India through its relationship with Aditya Birla’s fashion business, giving the football partnership a direct link to a wider retail and consumer growth strategy.Aryaman Vikram Birla, director of Aditya Birla Group, said sportswear was becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s fashion and lifestyle market, with Reebok positioned to benefit from that growth.NorthEast United offer a targeted route into that opportunity. The club represent all eight states of Northeast India, a region with a strong football culture that provides Reebok with a more defined audience than a broad national sponsorship. The new jersey incorporates eight stars representing those states, linking the commercial partnership directly to the club’s regional identity.NorthEast United co-owner John Abraham said: “Reebok’s sporting heritage speaks for itself, and this partnership with NorthEast United FC is a special moment for us.“This partnership reflects the ambition we have for the club, both on and off the pitch, and we’re excited about the opportunities this creates for football in the region.”The deal also gives NorthEast United a stronger merchandising proposition, with Reebok able to extend the relationship beyond playing kits into consumer apparel and other club products.Reebok India brand head Arjun Ramamoorthy said football provided an authentic platform to engage a new generation of consumers, while NorthEast United offered both sporting credibility and a strong cultural connection. The partnership therefore serves a dual commercial purpose, giving Reebok a route back into Indian football while allowing NorthEast United to monetise their distinctive regional identity through a globally recognised sportswear brand.
