Real Madrid advances Bernabéu hospitality and pitch improvements
Real Madrid have opened part of the Bernabéu’s delayed Sky Bar and reportedly improved the stadium’s pitch, advancing two operational elements of its redevelopment.
Real Madrid have begun welcoming supporters into the Bernabéu’s Sky Bar following a prolonged contractual dispute, while changes to the stadium’s playing surface are reportedly addressing recurring maintenance problems. The developments concern two important aspects of the redeveloped venue: bringing a premium hospitality space into use and improving the reliability of a retractable pitch designed to support the stadium’s operation beyond football. The playing surface had previously attracted criticism from visiting teams, with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola commenting after a match in April 2024: “The Bernabéu looks fantastic; now they have to worry about the grass.”The 700-square-metre Sky Bar was conceived as one of the stadium’s flagship hospitality areas, with plans incorporating a restaurant, nightclub and viewing terraces. Its opening was delayed first by complications with the project and subsequently by a dispute involving Anastia Gourmet Hostelería, the company contracted in 2023 to operate the space.According to the supplied account, delayed payments to contractors led them to stop work, preventing completion of the facilities needed to obtain an opening licence.Real Madrid pursued legal proceedings over an 18-month period, with a court ruling in May granting the club the right to manage the venue and allowing preparations for its opening to resume. The space has now admitted supporters for the first time, although that initial opening does not represent the full launch of the planned hospitality operation.Separately, Marca reports that the club has found a more satisfactory solution to pitch problems that required five replacements during the 2022/23 season and continued, to a lesser extent, in subsequent campaigns.Following the Bernabéu’s hosting of an NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders last year, the club faced a 72-hour turnaround to replace the playing surface.Rather than replacing the entire pitch system, Real Madrid retained the existing trays and hybrid reinforcement after assessing the underlying structure as being in good condition.New grass cultivated over several months in Cáceres was installed on that retained base, using a mixture of ryegrass and Poa pratensis known as RyeBlue Deportivo. The club is reportedly satisfied with the resulting surface, although the assessment remains a reported operational improvement rather than confirmation that future pitch maintenance issues have been eliminated. The stadium is also scheduled to receive a Real Madrid crest alongside the Bernabéu lettering on its façade, adding another finishing element as work continues across the venue. The Sky Bar’s phased opening and the pitch changes advance the club’s efforts to bring the redeveloped stadium’s hospitality and multi-event facilities into reliable operation.
