NWSL turns to Roku to make Sunday nights a free viewing habit

The NWSL is giving Roku an exclusive free Sunday-night package as the league uses connected-TV reach to create a regular destination for viewers within an increasingly fragmented US media portfolio.

brief

The NWSL has expanded its partnership with Roku to create an exclusive Sunday-night match package, using free streaming to increase reach and establish a more consistent weekly viewing destination.Roku Sports Channel will show eight matches over the remainder of 2026 before expanding to 25 Sunday-night fixtures in 2027, beginning with Seattle Reign against Houston Dash on August 30.NWSL chief marketing officer Rachel Epstein said: “Roku’s tremendous scale and accessibility make them an exciting partner as we bring more NWSL matches to more viewers.”The games will be available free through Roku, adding live rights to an existing relationship that already includes the NWSL Zone. That service provides highlights, replays and league programming while directing viewers towards matches carried by other NWSL media partners. Those partners include CBS Sports, ESPN, Ion, Prime Video and the league-operated NWSL+ platform, making discoverability an increasingly important issue as inventory is spread across multiple services.Roku says its reach extends to more than half of US streaming households. That scale gives the NWSL a low-friction route to viewers who may not already subscribe to a traditional sports service or know which platform carries a particular match. The agreement also follows the NWSL’s termination of its relationship with Victory+ after missed rights payments. That context makes the Roku expansion relevant not only as an audience-growth initiative but as part of the league’s continuing management of a broad and evolving media portfolio.Women’s leagues face a recurring trade-off between maximising immediate rights income and maximising exposure during a period of audience growth.A free weekly window can support the latter while preserving other premium inventory for larger broadcast and subscription partners.Roku also gains its highest-profile current live sports property alongside rights including Formula E, X Games and other specialist competitions. The first eight-match package will provide an immediate test of whether a recognisable Sunday-night slot can convert Roku’s distribution scale into habitual NWSL viewing before the inventory increases substantially in 2027.
