NWSL drops star-player pay restrictions in union settlement
The NWSL has agreed to remove eligibility restrictions from its High Impact Player mechanism, widening access to additional salary funding as a settlement with the players’ union strengthens financial transparency and contract protections.
The NWSL will allow clubs to designate any qualifying salary contract under its High Impact Player mechanism from January 2027, removing sporting and commercial eligibility tests after a settlement with the NWSL Players Association. The agreement resolves six grievances covering pay rules, the rejection of an initial Trinity Rodman contract, footwear sponsorship restrictions and other collectively bargained protections.NWSLPA executive director Meghann Burke said: “This settlement is about Players having a voice in shaping the future of this League.“Players have earned a seat at the bargaining table, and our Union will enforce it. This settlement demonstrates that what is good for Players is good for NWSL and for the game.”The HIP mechanism gives clubs access to an additional US$1m once they reach their salary cap, providing a route to retain and recruit players beyond the standard spending limit.Previously, players needed to meet at least one of eight criteria, including international appearances, individual awards or inclusion in media rankings of performance and marketability. Those restrictions will disappear on January 1, although a designated player’s salary must equal at least 12% of the base salary cap.The league can impose a uniform limit on the number of HIP players per club, while the additional funding will grow at the same base rate as the salary cap.NWSL executive vice-president Bill Ordower said: “Disagreements are a natural part of any mature labor relationship, particularly in a league that is growing and evolving as quickly as ours.“What matters is how you work through them. This agreement gives the players, clubs and league greater clarity and certainty moving forward, while protecting the integrity and competitive balance that is fundamental to the NWSL.”The settlement does not increase the underlying salary cap, an approach the union had preferred to the original restricted mechanism. It does strengthen oversight of revenue-sharing calculations, requiring financial disclosures by June 15 and projections for the following season by October 1.Where revenue exceeds projections, the salary cap must be adjusted in the same year, with the union and its auditors able to request supporting records. The league retains authority to reject contracts for cap circumvention but must notify the union and provide an explanation within 72 hours. That provision follows the dispute over Washington Spirit’s initial proposal to retain Rodman, which commissioner Jessica Berman rejected over its structure. Rodman subsequently signed a different agreement worth more than US$2m annually. The footwear settlement withdraws previous fines and protects compliant pre-existing endorsement agreements for most affected players. The league has also reached an agreement with New Balance.Players and clubs gain wider scope to negotiate performance bonuses, including appearance and minutes-played milestones, individual honours and participation in official international club competitions.NWSLPA deputy executive director Tori Huster said: “Behind each of these grievances are rights that matter to Players’ careers and livelihoods, from the compensation they can negotiate to the benefits they depend on.“Our union is committed to ensuring that the lived experience of players lives up to the terms we collectively bargained for.”The agreement also preserves specified housing and vehicle benefits for qualifying players for the duration of their existing contracts.
