Nottingham MPs back Forest stadium expansion as economic case strengthens

Nottingham Forest’s plans to expand the City Ground to around 52,500 seats have received backing from the city’s three MPs, adding political support to a major infrastructure project with significant commercial and local economic implications.Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, Nottingham North and Kimberley MP Alex Norris and Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood said the redevelopment represented a “historic opportunity” for the city.The MPs said: “This is a historic opportunity to celebrate and preserve our city's proud heritage as home to a world-famous club, while boosting our local economy and creating well-paid, unionised jobs.”Forest submitted the latest expansion plans in January, with Rushcliffe Borough Council expected to consider the application at an extraordinary planning committee meeting before the end of the year.The proposed redevelopment would take the stadium from around 30,000 seats to approximately 52,500, materially increasing Forest’s ability to generate revenue from ticketing, hospitality, premium seating and major events.Demand is a central part of the business case. The MPs said Forest have recorded six consecutive seasons of sold-out home matches, leaving thousands of supporters unable to attend and limiting the club’s ability to monetise demand.They said: “The case for a bigger stadium has been clear for years - six consecutive seasons of sold-out games have meant that many thousands of local fans cannot see their team play on home turf, including a whole new generation of young supporters.”The expansion could also strengthen Nottingham’s position as a host city for major international football events, creating additional visitor spending across hotels, restaurants, transport and other local businesses.The current proposal is significantly larger than the earlier scheme approved in June 2025, which would have increased capacity to around 35,000 through the redevelopment of the Peter Taylor Stand.Forest unveiled plans for a much larger expansion six months later, reflecting the club’s growth ambitions following their return to the Premier League in 2022.A transport plan assessing the impact of the redevelopment on local roads was issued in summer 2026 and remains part of the wider planning process.Rushcliffe Borough Council has said it is continuing to work with Forest to agree a date for the application to be considered.Approval would give Forest a substantially larger commercial platform at the City Ground while supporting a wider regeneration and visitor-economy case for Nottingham.
