brief

Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) has completed its acquisition of a 70% stake in Northampton Town Ventures Limited (NTVL), the majority shareholder in Northampton Town, establishing a new ownership structure following approval from the Independent Football Regulator and English Football League.Existing investors David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne and Kelvin Thomas retain a combined 30% interest in NTVL, while the League Two club have confirmed that they enter the new structure debt free.SAC founding partners and incoming co-chairmen Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain said: “We recognise the strong position in which they are handing over the club. Northampton Town is debt free, has a strong relationship with its supporters and community and has solid foundations already in place.“Our responsibility is to protect those foundations while bringing the investment, expertise and ambition required to build upon them.“We have ambitious plans for Northampton Town, but ambition must go hand in hand with sustainability and an understanding of what the club means to the people of Northampton and Northamptonshire.”The Brazilian-UK investment group combines long-term capital with operational expertise and an active ownership model, drawing on partners with backgrounds in professional football, private equity, finance, technology, business and media.Former Brazil, AC Milan and Chelsea forward Pato is among its investors and will join Northampton’s board as a director, bringing a professional football background to the ownership group alongside its financial and business expertise.Thomas steps down as chairman after more than a decade but remains a shareholder and director alongside Bower and Le Quesne, maintaining continuity with the group that took control when Northampton faced a winding-up petition in 2015.Chief executive James Whiting and supporters’ representative Tom Cliffe remain on the board, while Jim Rosenthal and Mike Wailing become associate directors as Xavier and Chamberlain assume joint leadership. The takeover was among the first transactions to undergo the Independent Football Regulator’s investor review process, with Markham Capital & Sports Advisory originating the opportunity and acting as exclusive sell-side adviser to NTVL.The new owners have identified community relationships and sustainable development as priorities, linking their investment ambitions to cooperation with supporters, staff, commercial partners and local stakeholders.Xavier and Chamberlain added: “We want the club to continue to be a source of pride within its community and will work closely with the Community Trust, supporters, staff, partners and local stakeholders to ensure that relationship continues to grow.“We are looking forward to spending much more time in Northampton, listening to supporters and working together to help the club realise its potential both on and off the pitch.“This is the beginning of a long-term commitment from Sports Alpha Capital to Northampton Town Football Club, and we are incredibly excited about the journey ahead.”
