Northampton investment clears IFR hurdle as Sports Alpha deal nears completion
Northampton Town’s proposed investment by Sports Alpha Capital has cleared both the Independent Football Regulator and EFL approval processes, moving a deal involving former Brazil international Alexandre Pato closer to completion and providing an early test case for England’s new football ownership regime.
Northampton Town’s proposed shareholding acquisition by Sports Alpha Capital has cleared regulatory scrutiny from both the Independent Football Regulator and the EFL, leaving final documentation as the main outstanding step before completion.Sports Alpha Capital is a football-focused investment group bringing together capital and expertise from professional football, private equity, finance, business and media, with connections between Brazil and the UK.Northampton chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “As one of the first football clubs to be considered under the new regulatory framework, the proposed investors have been required to successfully navigate both the EFL clearance and IFR approval processes.“This has been a detailed and rigorous process, involving significant scrutiny of the proposed investment, the ownership structure, financial sustainability, and the suitability and financial standing of those involved.”The investor group includes former AC Milan and Chelsea forward Alexandre Pato, adding a high-profile football figure to a consortium that is expected to take a shareholding in the club. The transaction is commercially significant for Northampton beyond the ownership change itself. Thomas previously said the investment is intended to leave the club debt free, although the process could be staged and the existing ownership group may remain involved.Northampton had also acknowledged financial pressure before the deal progressed, with Thomas saying earlier this year that the club had spent around £3m during the season in which they were relegated. The proposed investment therefore offers the club an opportunity to strengthen their balance sheet while adding external capital and operating expertise as they seek to rebuild. The transaction also provides an early indication of how the IFR’s new ownership regime will operate alongside existing EFL processes. The regulator’s assessment included the proposed ownership structure, financial sustainability and the financial standing and suitability of investors, adding another layer of scrutiny to transactions involving English clubs.Thomas said: “The successful completion of both the IFR and EFL processes represents an important milestone for the club and should provide supporters and stakeholders with further confidence in the proposed investment and the foundations being put in place for the club’s future.”Northampton’s majority shareholding is currently held through Northampton Town Ventures, with Thomas among the existing owners.Sports Alpha Capital will now work with the club to complete the remaining legal documentation and finalise the investment.Northampton said full details of the transaction, ownership structure and principal investors will be disclosed when the deal completes.
