Naples approves €50m for Maradona redevelopment
Naples has assembled €200m in public funding to modernise the Maradona stadium, strengthening its Euro 2032 candidature as Italy prepares to select its tournament venues.
Naples City Council has authorised €50m for the redevelopment of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, completing a €200m public funding package intended to bring the stadium up to Euro 2032 standards.The municipal contribution supplements €150m allocated by the Campania region, with the council approving the use of its own resources at the initiative of Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. The municipality’s announcement stated: “These resources, together with those allocated by the Campania region, will guarantee the necessary financial coverage for the project.”The approval provides the financial backing required to progress Naples’ candidature within the timetable set by football authorities, while the city awaits the completion of the Italian Football Federation and UEFA assessment process.Alongside the funding decision, the municipal executive has approved design guidelines for work to redevelop and modernise the stadium, establishing a framework for the proposed improvements.The decisions follow an agreement signed in April 2026 between the Campania region and Naples municipality covering strategic investments in the city and the Maradona stadium. The 54,732-capacity venue requires restoration to qualify for Euro 2032, which Italy will jointly host with Türkiye, with Naples competing for a place among the tournament’s host cities.The stadium belongs to the municipality rather than Napoli, making public investment central to the financing of the redevelopment and placing responsibility for the infrastructure programme with the city and regional authorities.Campania’s allocation represents three-quarters of the €200m package, with the municipal contribution covering the remaining quarter and bringing the funding commitments into line with the anticipated redevelopment cost.Naples plans to renovate the existing stadium rather than replace it, contrasting with the new stadium projects being pursued in Milan and Rome as Italian football prepares its infrastructure for the tournament.The funding approval advances the project’s financial preparation, although the Maradona’s inclusion in the final Euro 2032 venue selection remains subject to the football authorities’ decision.
