Milan officials are targeting the second half of 2027 for construction to begin on Inter and AC Milan’s new stadium as the city accelerates approvals ahead of UEFA Euro 2032.
Construction of Inter and AC Milan’s proposed new stadium could begin in the second half of 2027 after local authorities agreed a joint process to accelerate planning and environmental approvals.The Municipality of Milan and Lombardy Region are working to complete the remaining authorisation procedures by summer 2027, creating the clearest delivery timetable yet for the long-delayed project.Milan deputy mayor Anna Scavuzzo said the city was targeting a construction start during the second half of that year, provided technical reviews and environmental assessments remain on schedule.The clubs plan to build a 71,500-seat venue alongside the existing San Siro before partially demolishing and repurposing the historic stadium.Foster + Partners and MANICA are leading the design, which is intended to provide Inter and Milan with the premium seating, hospitality and non-matchday facilities required to compete commercially with Europe’s leading clubs.The project will be delivered through Stadio San Siro Spa, the development company established by the two clubs.Its implementation plan has already been submitted, with authorities now examining the environmental, transport and technical implications of the wider redevelopment.The first phase will also include the construction of the new Patroclo road tunnel and infrastructure improvements around the San Siro district.Those works are intended to support higher event-day capacity and unlock a broader regeneration programme involving commercial, entertainment and public spaces.The timetable is closely connected to Milan’s ambition to host matches during UEFA Euro 2032, which Italy will stage jointly with Turkey.Italy must identify five suitable host venues, increasing pressure on Milan to demonstrate that the new stadium can be delivered or sufficiently advanced before the tournament.Inter and Milan completed the acquisition of the San Siro site from the municipality in 2025, ending years of uncertainty over ownership and giving the clubs greater control over the development.The current stadium will remain operational while the new venue is constructed, protecting matchday income during the building period.A 2027 start would represent a major breakthrough after repeated delays caused by political opposition, heritage protections and disagreements over the future of San Siro.The remaining approval process will now determine whether Milan’s latest timetable becomes a deliverable construction programme rather than another target in the project’s prolonged development.
