Manchester City sets phased opening for expanded North Stand

Manchester City has set a May 20 test event as the first public step in a phased opening of the expanded North Stand at the Etihad Stadium ahead of a planned full-capacity debut for the May 24 Premier League match against Aston Villa.

brief

Manchester City has confirmed a phased opening plan for the expanded North Stand at the Etihad Stadium, using a programme of operational test events as they target full use of the new general admission seating for their final home league match of the season against Aston Villa on May 24.The club will stage a two-hour fan event inside the expanded area on May 20, subject to the new sections passing internal checks, with more than 3,500 supporters expected to attend at 50% of the additional seating capacity.Danny Wilson, Managing Director, Manchester City Operations, said: “After years of planning and construction, we’re getting close to using the expanded general admission seating section of the North Stand – a significant moment in the history of this Club that will see us break the Etihad Stadium’s record matchday attendance.“Our aim has always been to open the new general admission seating before the end of the 2025/26 season. To do this, we must host a number of test events, with the evening of entertainment on Wednesday 20th playing a vital role. We hope more than 3,500 fans will join us, enjoy the evening with friends and family, and be the first to experience the expanded North Stand.”The club has linked the May 20 turnout directly to the next step in the opening plan, saying it needs 3,500 or more fans to attend the half-capacity event to complete the required checks before progressing to a full-capacity trial. If the trial is successful, City intend to operate the expanded North Stand at 100% for the Aston Villa match, which is expected to set a new club record attendance and lift the stadium’s overall capacity from 53,400 to more than 60,000.The May 20 event will run from 6pm to 8pm and will include appearances from former players, live music, family activities, photo opportunities with the Carabao Cup and prize giveaways.Tickets are scheduled to go on sale May 1 at 2pm, with each ticket including a free food item and a soft drink or alcoholic beverage, which the club said can be consumed from seats in the stadium bowl in a departure from normal men’s matchday operations.Beyond the immediate capacity uplift, the expanded North Stand sits within a broader Etihad Campus redevelopment strategy that is designed to drive incremental matchday and non-matchday revenue. The wider project includes new hospitality areas, a dedicated fan zone and an entertainment destination branded Medlock Square, with openings planned later in the year, while an on-site hotel is also part of the development with bookings now available.City said further information on ticket availability for the May 24 Aston Villa fixture will be provided in due course.
