Liga MX and Genius Sports strike multi-year AI and tech deal
Genius Sports and Liga MX have agreed a multi-year technology and AI partnership that installs GeniusIQ across every Liga MX stadium to power new sponsor inventory, enhanced broadcasts, officiating tools and club performance analysis.
Genius Sports has signed a wide-ranging technology and AI partnership with Liga MX that will see its GeniusIQ platform deployed across every stadium in Mexico’s top men’s league. The agreement is designed to touch four revenue and product areas at once: sponsorship activation, broadcast production, officiating support and performance workflows for clubs.Edgar Martínez, vice president of content at the FMF, said: “At Liga MX, we are very happy to close this partnership with Genius Sports, as it represents a significant step in elevating our competition to the standards of the world’s leading leagues.”Martínez said the deal combines on-pitch integrity benefits with audience growth ambitions, pointing to semi-automated offside technology and augmented reality-style broadcast integrations as parallel priorities. The sponsorship component centres on Genius Sports’ “Moment Engine”, which is designed to trigger real-time advertising campaigns linked to live match events such as goals, saves and substitutions. That model aims to create sponsor inventory that is more contextual and time-sensitive than standard in-game rotations, allowing brands to buy against high-attention moments across broadcast, streaming and digital environments. On the media side, Genius Sports will work with Liga MX and domestic and international broadcasters to produce augmented “altcasts” that layer real-time data into the live feed. The overlays are intended to include metrics such as shot speed and player speed, plus on-screen identifiers and visualisations, with the goal of creating a more interactive broadcast for younger and social-first audiences. The partnership also formalises the role of GeniusIQ in officiating, with Liga MX using the platform to run Semi-Automated Offside Technology that automates key elements of the offside review process.Genius Sports said the system provides VAR operators with rapid kick-point detection and a 3D decision visual that can reduce manual line-drawing and speed up review timelines. From a football operations standpoint, Liga MX clubs will be equipped with Genius Sports’ Performance Studio, which combines video, tracking and analytics tools for coaching, opposition analysis and player development. The package includes a 3D review feature intended to let coaches replay moments from a player’s perspective, turning the same underlying tracking and video infrastructure into day-to-day training and tactical use.Sean Conroy, executive vice president, North America at Genius Sports, said: “The deployment of our next generation data and AI platform, GeniusIQ, will connect every part of that ecosystem, delivering world-leading SAOT while enriching the broadcast and creating premium new commercial inventory for sponsors.”Conroy positioned the roll-out as a league-wide infrastructure play, with GeniusIQ installed across all venues rather than delivered as an optional club-by-club toolset. The league-wide approach is commercially significant because it standardises data capture and production quality, which can make it easier to sell national sponsorship packages, support consistent broadcast graphics and report delivery to partners. It also gives Liga MX a single technology spine that can be extended over time, whether into additional camera and tracking upgrades, new sponsor formats, or betting-adjacent integrity and data distribution products, if the rights holder chooses to add them later.GeniusIQ went live in Liga MX during the current Clausura season, with the partnership now set to scale further as Liga MX and its broadcasters and sponsors build programming and activation plans around the new tooling.
