Leeds United begin Elland Road expansion work
Leeds United have started physical work on an Elland Road redevelopment designed to lift capacity to around 53,000 and upgrade the venue into a UEFA Category 4 stadium.
Leeds United have begun the first phase of an expansion and upgrade of Elland Road, starting with enabling works in the West Stand. The project is central to the club’s long-term revenue plan, with a larger capacity and upgraded hospitality designed to increase matchday yield and support broader commercial growth.Leeds United said: “The enhancement of Leeds United’s iconic Elland Road Stadium is officially under way. Our home, our future and a momentous moment in the club’s 106-year existence, work has now begun on the West Stand starting with the removal of the Banqueting Suite, shaping the future of Elland Road.”Club executives, Leeds City Council representatives, the Leeds United Foundation and club ambassadors including Stuart Dallas, Tony Dorigo and Eddie Gray attended to mark the start of the works. The West Stand redevelopment is the first stage of a wider transformation intended to take Elland Road into UEFA’s top stadium category, with the club positioning the venue as capable of staging major events beyond domestic matchdays.Leeds said the capacity uplift is a strategic priority, pointing to a season ticket waiting list of around 32,000 as demand continues to outstrip supply. The club has also pitched the scheme as a city-region asset, highlighting the potential to attract international tournaments and showcase events alongside wider cultural and economic benefits for Leeds.Supporter-facing upgrades are set to include improved seating comfort and sightlines in the expanded West Stand, enhanced concourses and fan amenity spaces inside and around the stadium, improved accessibility, and upgraded hospitality facilities.Leeds have described the new West Stand as being built over the top of the existing structure, an approach designed to modernise the footprint while retaining continuity of the venue’s core form and atmosphere.Elland Road currently holds just under 38,000, with the planned capacity target of around 53,000 set to move the stadium into the top tier of English club venues by size.
