KNVB turns Infantino revolt into FIFA redesign plan
The Dutch football association has proposed an international summit to redesign FIFA governance and direct up to 90% of distributable revenue into football development as opposition to Gianni Infantino moves towards a structural reform agenda.
The KNVB has proposed an International Summit on the Future of FIFA in Amsterdam as it pushes for wholesale governance reform alongside new leadership at world football’s governing body.The Dutch association wants the summit to establish a new institutional model before FIFA determines who should lead the organisation after 2027. The KNVB said: “But a new President alone is not enough. The way FIFA is governed must change as well.”Its proposals include stronger checks and balances, greater separation between the FIFA president and administration, and putting human rights and sustainability more firmly into decision-making.The KNVB also wants FIFA to work towards reinvesting as much as 90% of its distributable revenue into football development. That proposal gives the campaign a substantial financial dimension.Any significant change to FIFA’s distribution model would affect the relationship between the governing body and its 211 member associations, particularly federations that depend heavily on central development funding.The KNVB has already withdrawn its confidence in president Gianni Infantino and wants new FIFA leadership from 2027. Its latest intervention goes further by arguing that leadership change without institutional reform would leave the underlying concentration of power intact.The Dutch association wants the proposed Amsterdam summit to involve member associations and confederations from across world football rather than operate as a European initiative.The proposal follows an escalation in the wider confrontation around FIFA governance, including UEFA’s legal challenge over the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise commercial restructuring.Infantino is due to face FIFA’s next presidential election in March 2027.The KNVB’s intervention therefore attempts to move the debate from individual opposition towards an alternative model covering executive power, governance controls and revenue distribution.A confirmed summit involving a meaningful group of FIFA members would turn the Dutch proposal into a potentially significant step in shaping the organisation before its next leadership decision.
