IREN backs Real Madrid as Spanish expansion gathers pace
IREN has become an official sponsor of Real Madrid, adding a European football partnership as the AI infrastructure company expands into Spain through its acquisition of data centre developer Ingenostrum.
Real Madrid have signed IREN as an official sponsor, giving the AI infrastructure company a football platform as it develops its presence in Spain and enters the European market. The agreement adds Real Madrid to a sponsorship portfolio that includes the Golden State Warriors, connecting IREN with another internationally recognised sports brand as it expands its data centre and AI cloud operations.Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid and IREN establish an alliance between two organizations committed to the community, innovation, and technological progress.”The partnership follows IREN’s agreement to acquire Spanish data centre developer Ingenostrum, also known as Nostrum Group, in a transaction intended to establish a European base for the business.IREN said the acquisition adds approximately 490 megawatts of secured, grid-connected power in Spain, together with an additional development pipeline, taking its overall power portfolio to five gigawatts. Those figures describe the infrastructure available to support its expansion rather than operational computing capacity, with development and delivery still required to turn power access into completed data centre services. The company has identified Spain as an attractive market for large-scale AI infrastructure, citing connectivity, renewable energy availability and the regulatory and permitting environment. Its agreement with Madrid places a sports marketing relationship alongside that investment programme, providing brand exposure in a country where it is building an operating presence. The sponsorship also extends IREN’s sporting activity beyond US basketball, where it holds the Golden State Warriors’ jersey patch rights. The Madrid agreement has been described as an official sponsorship, with the supplied announcement identifying community, innovation and technological progress as shared themes. That positioning connects the partnership with IREN’s wider technology business, although no specific supporter activation, community programme or technical project was outlined. The distinction is relevant because a sponsorship relationship does not itself establish that IREN will provide data centre capacity, cloud services or other infrastructure to the club.IREN’s Spanish acquisition brings a local team with experience across development, engineering, construction and operations, capabilities the company intends to use to support its European growth. The business has said the additional power and development opportunities will help it respond to customer demand in Europe while expanding its AI Cloud platform internationally.Real Madrid’s role within that strategy is as a commercial partner offering recognition and audience access, alongside the separate operational work involved in developing the Spanish business. The combination of a local acquisition and a prominent sponsorship gives IREN two routes into the market: infrastructure and personnel through Ingenostrum, and sports-led brand visibility through Madrid. The next stage of its European expansion will involve progressing the Spanish development portfolio and integrating the acquired team, while the club partnership adds to its international sponsorship activity.
