Infantino isolation deepens as FIFA system turns against him

Gianni Infantino is facing an escalating leadership crisis after UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF reportedly suspended their participation in FIFA governance bodies until the president resigns.The coordinated action would disrupt committee work and decision-making across FIFA, extending the fallout from the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal beyond public criticism and withdrawn election endorsements.FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström said in an email to employees: “A sad and reproachable series of events, which were thankfully concluded with the FFE project permanently abandoned, for as much as we feel dismayed by them, should not overshadow this reality.“We have all been thrown into the middle of a turmoil, which is difficult to comprehend and accept, but, as Secretary General, I urge you to remain focused on what has always united us: serving football and serving our 211 Member Associations, hand in hand with all relevant stakeholders and in full compliance with the FIFA Statutes and FIFA Regulations.”Grafström’s intervention is significant because he previously served as Infantino’s chief of staff before becoming secretary general, making him one of the president’s closest and most senior officials.Grafström said: “I assure you that you as members of the administration, you will be defended and safeguarded from the political context we currently experience. You do not need to worry.“Individuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go. The institution, its mission and its responsibility towards world football continue, and that is why we should always keep our professionalism, sense of perspective and composure.”Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s chief of global football development, has also distanced himself from the project after saying he only became aware of the proposed transaction through media reports.Wenger said: “I don’t see how it could be a good idea. The World Cup belongs to FIFA and the national associations, and I don’t think it should be sold to private investors.”The opposition follows the resignation of senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro, while FIFA chief operating officer Kevin Lamour has accused Infantino of deceiving staff over a plan developed without sufficient internal consultation.FIFA Forward Enterprise would have sold investors about 20% of a new commercial company holding rights connected to competitions including the men’s and women’s World Cups, with the proposed US$4.2bn investment implying a valuation of approximately US$20bn.UEFA has begun considering legal action, arbitration or regulatory complaints and has instructed FIFA to preserve documents and electronic communications connected to the proposal.European associations including England, Finland, Serbia and Wales have withdrawn their endorsements of Infantino’s 2027 re-election campaign, while Sweden have confirmed they will oppose him.Pressure is now spreading through CONCACAF, where all 41 associations previously submitted endorsement letters but several members are considering withdrawing their support following an emergency meeting.The United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica face additional sensitivities because they are involved in the bid to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup, which requires FIFA approval in November.Further defections across CONCACAF would remove another central part of Infantino’s international coalition, while the withdrawal of three confederations from FIFA governance bodies would make his position increasingly difficult to sustain before the March 2027 election.
