DAZN takes Liga Portugal into four key markets
DAZN has expanded its football portfolio across four markets after acquiring selected Liga Portugal rights in Japan, Italy, Belgium and Spain for the 2026-27 season.
DAZN has secured rights to selected Liga Portugal matches across Japan, Italy, Belgium and Spain in a multi-territory agreement brokered by SPORTFIVE, extending the Portuguese top flight’s international distribution.The deal covers three matches per round from the start of the 2026-27 season, with DAZN holding exclusive rights in Japan, Italy and Belgium and non-exclusive rights in Spain.SPORTFIVE executive director of media Pedro Cubillos said: “Liga Portugal continues to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s most attractive football competitions, generating increasing interest from broadcasters and fans around the world.“This agreement with DAZN is a strong example of how the league’s growing international appeal is creating new opportunities to expand its global audience and deliver greater value to clubs, partners and supporters.”The package includes live and delayed broadcasts across all current and future distribution platforms, with English-language commentary supplied and local-language coverage permitted in each territory.Portuguese-language commentary will not be available in Spain, where DAZN’s rights are non-exclusive.SPORTFIVE director of global media Shona Young said: “We are delighted to have worked closely with both DAZN and Liga Portugal to secure this multi-territory agreement.“By bringing selected matches to audiences across Japan, Italy, Belgium and Spain, this partnership further enhances the visibility of Portuguese football and demonstrates the continued demand for high-quality international football content.”The agreement follows SPORTFIVE’s renewal of its international media rights mandate for Liga Portugal through the 2027-28 season, with the agency responsible for distribution across global markets outside Portugal.DAZN senior vice-president of rights Thomas Waterhouse said: “At DAZN, our ambition is to offer fans the very best football and continue strengthening our position as the leading destination for sports enthusiasts around the world.“Bringing Liga Portugal to new international markets reinforces our commitment to expanding our portfolio of premium football rights and making top-tier competitions available to an ever-growing global audience.”The deal gives Liga Portugal additional exposure around Benfica, Porto and Sporting while providing DAZN with complementary weekend inventory across four established football markets.
