Concacaf revamps W Champions Cup format from 2027
Concacaf will overhaul its W Champions Cup from 2027 into an 11-club, knockout-only competition running July to October, aiming for tighter scheduling and higher-stakes fixtures.
Concacaf will introduce a new format for the Concacaf W Champions Cup from the 2027 edition, moving to an 11-club, decentralised knockout structure designed to increase competitiveness and streamline the calendar. The competition will run continuously from July to October, replacing the current model that uses a group stage followed by a centralised finals event.Concacaf president Victor Montagliani said the shift is intended to make each match more meaningful while creating a cleaner competition flow.“This new format marks an important step forward for women’s club football in Concacaf.“By increasing the importance of every match, reducing gaps in the calendar, and delivering a more consistent competition flow, we are strengthening the overall experience for clubs, players, and fans.“This evolution also reflects our continued commitment to the growth of women’s club football in the region and our football-first philosophy. We look forward to seeing these changes come to life in what promises to be an exciting 2027 edition.”The 2027 competition will feature 16 matches in total, starting with a two-stage preliminary round involving five clubs, followed by home-and-away quarter-finals and semi-finals, and a single-leg final. Two clubs will play in the first preliminary stage, with three more entering in the second stage based on ranking. All preliminary ties will be single-leg matches hosted by the higher-ranked club, with the two winners advancing to the quarter-finals to join six pre-qualified clubs. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played over two legs, with the final staged as a single match hosted by the best-performing team across the quarter-finals and semi-finals only.Concacaf has set out a month-by-month cadence for 2027, with prelims in July, quarter-finals in August, semi-finals in September and the final in October, with exact match windows to be confirmed later.Qualification will continue to be via domestic leagues on sporting merit, using criteria proposed by member associations and approved by Concacaf. The 11 slots for 2027 have been allocated with prelim entrants from Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica and Panama, while Mexico and the United States will each place three clubs directly into the quarter-finals alongside the two prelim winners.Concacaf also confirmed the W Champions Cup will remain the region’s sole pathway into FIFA-organised global women’s club competitions, with berth allocation tied to upcoming FIFA Women’s Club World Cup and FIFA Women’s Champions Cup cycles. The 2025–26 finals, which will conclude the last edition under the current format, are scheduled for May 20–23 in Pachuca, Mexico.
