Celta secure 50-year Balaídos deal with expanded commercial control
Celta Vigo have secured a 50-year concession to remain at the municipally owned Estadio Abanca Balaídos, giving the club long-term control over commercial activity at the venue and the option to extend the agreement to 75 years.
Celta Vigo have secured approval for a 50-year concession to continue playing at Estadio Abanca Balaídos, providing the LaLiga club with long-term certainty over their home and broader rights to commercialise the venue. The agreement includes an option to extend the concession to 75 years. Celta will pay Vigo City Council, which owns the 24,870-capacity stadium, an annual fee of €802,800.Vigo mayor Abel Caballero said: “This is extraordinary for the city and very good for sport, for football and for Celta.”The deal gives Celta rights to use the stadium and associated premises for football matches and other events, while also expanding their ability to generate revenue from the venue. The club will be permitted to commercialise audiovisual rights linked to sporting events, introduce a commercial name for the stadium and stage cultural, leisure and entertainment activities. Those rights give Celta greater scope to increase stadium-related income beyond matchday ticketing, particularly through naming rights, events and hospitality. The annual concession fee can also be adjusted in certain circumstances, including investment in stadium works, the staging of cultural and leisure activities and revenue losses caused by relocating season-ticket holders during redevelopment.Vigo City Council will retain rights over areas surrounding the stadium and maintain an advertising presence inside the venue. The authority will also retain the ability to carry out structural redevelopment or expansion projects in coordination with Celta, preserving public oversight of the municipally owned asset. The concession was initially agreed in April and has now received final approval after the economic and administrative terms passed without objections. The long-term deal also arrives as Celta increase their focus on extracting more commercial value from Balaídos. The club recently appointed Oak View Group to develop hospitality and catering at the stadium, marking OVG Hospitality’s entry into the Spanish market. That partnership will introduce a new food and beverage concept aimed at supporters, corporate customers and other visitors as part of the stadium’s wider modernisation.Taken together, the concession and hospitality agreement give Celta a much stronger platform to treat Balaídos as a year-round commercial asset, while the city retains ownership and secures a long-term annual return from the stadium.
