Bundesliga puts AI camera system into premium broadcast workflow
The Bundesliga has used an AI-controlled camera system to produce an international tactical feed at the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, moving automated production technology into a live premium-football workflow.
An AI-powered automated camera system was used to produce the international tactical feed at the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.The system combined Studio Automated’s artificial-intelligence camera technology with an Egripment HotHead 3 remote head during the August 22 fixture.Broadcast Solutions senior business development manager Jens Fischer said: “What started as a technology showcase at Sportsinnovation has now delivered an international tactical feed for one of Germany’s most prestigious football events.”The deployment moves the technology beyond controlled demonstrations and into a live production environment used for international football distribution.Studio Automated’s system analyses the broader match context rather than relying only on automated tracking of the ball or individual players. It then applies production principles to determine camera framing and movement through the robotic camera head.The commercial opportunity lies in reducing the incremental cost of specialist feeds. Additional tactical or analytical feeds traditionally require more camera operators, production staff and technical resources, limiting how many versions a rights holder can economically provide.Reliable automation could allow leagues and broadcasters to expand that inventory without increasing staffing costs at the same rate. Those feeds could support conventional broadcasters, streaming platforms, coaching products and other specialist audiences.The Bundesliga and host broadcaster Sportcast have previously used the Supercup to test production technology before wider deployment.Current claims about the system’s performance remain led by its technology suppliers and one deployment does not establish that automation can replace conventional workflows at scale.The important step is that AI-controlled camera production has now been used in a premium match feed rather than only as a demonstration.Further deployments will indicate whether the technology can become a regular production tool and whether lower-cost specialist feeds create new commercial inventory for football rights owners.
