Bundesliga Media and SAFA seal development partnership
SAFA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bundesliga Media that pairs an Under-16 tour to Germany with wider support on commercial, technical and operational development.
The South African Football Association has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bundesliga Media to accelerate youth development and strengthen the federation’s operating model via closer links to German football. The partnership is designed to create new pathways for South African players, coaches and administrators, while giving the Bundesliga a deeper on-the-ground role in one of Africa’s most established football markets. The first visible deliverable is Bundesliga Dream South Africa, a youth initiative that will send South Africa’s Under-16 national team to Germany from May 15 to May 25 for a high-performance training camp and international experience tour.During the trip, the squad will train and play against the academy sides of SV Werder Bremen and DSC Arminia Bielefeld, giving SAFA’s age-group set-up early exposure to European training standards and competition environments.Former Bafana Bafana international Delron Buckley is expected to support the programme in Bielefeld, providing coaching input and mentorship as part of the tour schedule.SAFA and Bundesliga Media have positioned the project as a starting point for a longer working relationship rather than a one-off trip, with a broader collaboration plan built into the agreement.Beyond player development, the memorandum covers commercial strategy and sponsorship, fan engagement and brand development, media training, and technical expertise across on-field and off-field operations. The scope suggests a dual track approach, combining football development with capability building inside the federation that could influence partner servicing, content planning and the professionalisation of internal processes.Bundesliga Media has increased its activity in South Africa in recent years through its Johannesburg office and local partnerships, and the SAFA agreement formalises that presence into an institutional link with the national governing body.German clubs are also increasing market-facing activity in the country, giving the partnership additional visibility and activation opportunities tied to club tours and grassroots programming.RB Leipzig are scheduled to visit South Africa later this month on a post-season tour, while Werder Bremen have previously staged coaching clinics in Durban and Cape Town, and FC Augsburg have also toured the market. The immediate next step is delivery of the Under-16 Germany camp, with any longer-term expansion likely to depend on programme outcomes and the ability to convert technical collaboration into sustained funding and sponsor-backed initiatives.
