Beckham bends his brand into Fortnite’s digital economy
David Beckham has joined Fortnite’s Icon Series with a collection of playable outfits and virtual items that extends his commercial brand across football, fashion and gaming.
David Beckham has become the latest sports figure to join Fortnite’s Icon Series, giving Epic Games access to one of football’s most recognisable personal brands while extending his reach into gaming and virtual merchandise. The collection includes multiple Beckham character outfits, customised equipment and an in-game celebration inspired by his free-kick technique. It became available through the Fortnite Item Shop on July 18.Beckham said: “Fortnite creates new and exciting ways to connect with fans around the world.“It’s been great working with them to create something that celebrates my career on and off the pitch.”The main David Beckham outfit includes a shirtless alternative design with tattoos that glow gold after each elimination. It is accompanied by reactive back accessories and a LEGO-style character variant.A separate Club Owner outfit presents Beckham in a black suit with a club crest, reflecting his transition from player to football investor and co-owner of Inter Miami. The collection also includes the Beckham’s Shot emote, designed around his signature free-kick motion, alongside the Meteor Baller and Number Seven Scythe harvesting tools. The launch allows Epic Games to combine Beckham’s sporting history with his wider profile across fashion, ownership and popular culture. Fortnite has increasingly used its Icon Series to turn athletes, musicians and creators into playable digital identities.Beckham gains another licensing channel capable of reaching younger audiences who may know him as much through Inter Miami, fashion partnerships and social media as through his playing career. The collection also demonstrates how retired athletes can continue monetising their image through interactive products rather than relying only on traditional endorsements and physical merchandise.Epic Games can sell individual items while using Beckham’s global recognition to generate engagement around the Item Shop and Fortnite’s broader entertainment ecosystem. The partnership adds gaming to a commercial portfolio that has kept Beckham relevant across several generations, turning his number seven identity, playing style and ownership profile into assets for the virtual goods market.
