Bayern Munich and the NHL have launched a multi-year strategic partnership spanning content, merchandise, commercial collaboration and live events as the league intensifies its push into Germany.

brief

Bayern Munich and the NHL have agreed a multi-year partnership designed to combine their fanbases, commercial networks and international reach, while supporting the league’s wider strategy to grow its presence in Germany. The agreement will cover co-branded content, merchandise and commercial initiatives, with both organisations also planning to share knowledge around sponsorship, fan engagement and market development across Germany and North America.NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said: “We both have established fanbases; we both have established business partners. We want to collaborate and share information with respect to those business partners, and find ways to collaborate and move the business forward.”The partnership follows around six months of discussions between senior executives from Bayern and the NHL, with the organisations seeking a structure that goes beyond a conventional sponsorship agreement.Rouven Kasper, Bayern’s chief marketing officer and board member, said: “This is completely unique. Not just for our club. I think you’ve never seen it: that a league like the NHL is cooperating with a club and the other way around.“We are both thinking quite innovatively and going new ways. This is what you saw today, and it’s just the start.”The deal arrives as the NHL makes Germany a priority international growth market. The league has identified the country’s population, developed sports economy and existing ice hockey audience as offering significant expansion potential. That strategy will include an increased schedule of regular-season games in Germany. Boston Bruins are set to play two matches in Munich during the 2027-28 season, with Edmonton Oilers scheduled for two games in Cologne. Those fixtures will follow two games between Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators in Düsseldorf in December 2026, while the NHL has also committed to staging further games in Germany during the 2028-29 season. The partnership gives the NHL access to one of Germany’s largest sports brands and an established commercial infrastructure in a market it is seeking to penetrate more deeply.Bayern, meanwhile, gain a route into the NHL’s North American audience and business network, supporting the club’s wider international strategy in the US and Canada. The two organisations are also exploring longer-term possibilities around live events. Daly said an outdoor NHL game in Germany could eventually be considered, with Bayern’s Allianz Arena among the venues that could potentially support such a concept. The alliance creates an unusual model in which a major European football club and a North American professional league are using each other’s market position to accelerate international growth, rather than limiting the relationship to traditional sponsorship inventory.
