Bangladesh has secured domestic FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage after the government approved Bangladesh Television’s direct purchase of all-media rights days before kick-off.

brief

Bangladesh Television has received government approval to acquire the FIFA World Cup 2026 all-media broadcasting rights directly from FIFA, resolving uncertainty around coverage in a market where World Cup availability can drive mass audiences and advertising demand. The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the proposal at its June 7 meeting, allowing the state broadcaster to procure rights via a direct procurement method and deliver coverage across broadcast platforms. The contract value was set at Tk 72.71 crore, a figure Bangladeshi officials have positioned as a cost saving versus the 2022 tournament, when BTV acquired rights via an intermediary arrangement.BTV director general Md Mahbubul Alam signalled that sublicensing and shared transmission arrangements will sit with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry rather than the broadcaster itself, as private channels seek to carry matches.Alam said: “This is entirely a matter for the ministry. The ministry is handling it. Those who meet the required payment criteria may also be considered. Since this is under the ministry’s jurisdiction, further details can be obtained from them.”Local reporting said Somoy TV and T Sports are also set to broadcast the tournament, with rights sharing expected to expand if additional channels obtain ministry clearance. The decision is strategically relevant for FIFA and domestic media stakeholders because Bangladesh is a high-volume viewing market where broad distribution can support sponsor delivery, maintain audience momentum and reduce piracy risk.It also underlines how late-cycle World Cup negotiations can become in certain territories, with approvals and procurement processes running close to the opening match window.Alongside the Bangladesh distribution outcome, FIFA has continued to add regional commercial partners for the tournament, including Colombian courier and logistics brand Inter Rapidísimo, which has expanded its relationship with FIFA as a tournament supporter in Colombia. The 2026 World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and Bangladesh’s clearance gives brands and broadcasters a confirmed platform to plan inventory, shoulder programming and digital amplification around one of the year’s biggest live sports events.
