Athletic Club Boise steps up to USL Championship after breakout debut season

Athletic Club Boise will join the USL Championship from the 2027 season, moving into US football’s second tier after only one campaign in USL League One.The club’s move follows strong commercial and fan growth during its inaugural season, including more than 6,000 season tickets sold before the first match and sell-outs for every home game so far.Co-founder and chief executive Brad Stith said: “From the beginning, Boise has shown us that our community is ready to support something ambitious.“Our community has shown up big time. They’ve wrapped their arms around our players and our club, and that support is the driving force behind USL’s invitation to join Championship.”The club also set a USL League One regular-season attendance record when 7,247 supporters attended a home match on June 20.Those numbers have strengthened the commercial case for moving Boise into the Championship, where the club will gain access to a higher level of competition and broader national distribution through USL’s broadcast agreements with CBS Sports and ESPN.Athletic Club Boise said their matches have generated more than 150,000 views across national, streaming and local broadcasts during the club’s first season.The club has also built a social media following of almost 45,000 and generated more than 17.3 million views across its digital channels since January.USL Championship president Jeremy Alumbaugh said: “Athletic Club Boise has demonstrated what can happen when a club truly connects with its community.“The support and energy surrounding the club in Boise have been remarkable, and that strong foundation makes this a natural next step.”Boise will also invest in infrastructure ahead of the 2027 campaign, adding 3,000 seats to the east side of Athletic Club Boise Stadium.The expansion will increase inventory available for ticketing and matchday revenues after the club’s repeated sell-outs exposed existing capacity constraints.Construction will also begin on a new practice pitch and training facility, giving Boise infrastructure intended to support its longer-term development across both men’s and women’s football.The club already operates at Athletic Club Boise Stadium through a 30-year partnership with Ada County and plans to introduce a women’s team in 2028.Boise’s rapid move into the Championship provides USL with another example of its expansion model being supported by local demand, with attendance, digital reach and infrastructure investment combining to accelerate the club’s progression after just one season.
