AIFF and ISL clubs press Genius Sports for clarity on 20-year rights plan

AIFF and Indian Super League club owners are weighing a long-term commercial rights proposal from Genius Sports that promises a technology-led upgrade but has prompted clubs to demand clearer governance and deeper consultation.

brief

India’s football stakeholders have begun formal discussions on a proposed long-term commercial rights deal that could reshape the Indian Super League’s media, data and digital strategy, with clubs pushing for more transparency and a stronger role in decision-making.AIFF convened an online meeting with Genius Sports and representatives of ISL clubs to review the London-based company’s proposal, which would cover commercial rights for the ISL and the Federation Cup.Genius Sports is AIFF’s preferred bidder after offering Rs 64.4 crore per year with a 5% annual increase, totalling about Rs 2,130 crore across a 20-year term structured as 15 years plus an option period.AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan said: “We had a fruitful discussion with Genius Sports and the club representatives. Genius Sports have put forward their plans on how to take ISL to the next level and transform the league into a global product. "All present got a sneak preview of some of the technological and AI-driven aspects that can enhance the league experience for fans and also diversify monetisation opportunities for all stakeholders.”The presentation outlined a partnership-led approach built around technology, data and commercial support, including upgrades to digital platforms and match operations, plus phased AI-assisted tools aimed at improving consistency and transparency in officiating.Clubs signalled support for modernisation but asked for more detailed engagement on how any new model would work in India’s commercial ecosystem, including how responsibilities, revenue flows and operational control would be shared.FC Goa chief executive Ravi Puskur said: “The clubs proposed a more direct interaction with them, which was positively received by Genius, and we now look forward to that exchange before considering the way forward. I feel this requires more substantive discussion and deliberation before a conclusion can responsibly be reached.”Mohun Bagan Super Giant did not attend the online presentation, underlining the uneven alignment among stakeholders at a point when AIFF is trying to move the process towards approval.Separately, ISL club owners have sought a more structured route into the rights decision by proposing a club working committee of owners and senior executives to engage AIFF in what they described as a more transparent framework.Thirteen of the league’s 14 owners backed that request in a letter, proposing a group that includes owner-level representation and senior club executives, alongside a desire to exchange ideas and agree a sustainable, mutually beneficial model.AIFF is expected to seek a further presentation from Genius Sports for its executive committee and senior management before placing the proposal before the federation’s general body for final approval. The outcome will be watched closely by clubs and potential media partners, given the scale of the term and the implications for broadcast distribution, sponsorship packaging, data commercialisation and long-term league governance.
